I recently did a wedding trial when the bride said “I want to look classic, but I also want to stand out…” The lightbulb went on in my head- Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC. Now, I know enough to feel certain that if I say “how about red?” the client will recoil with fear. So, I just put it on her. Her eyes lit up, and it was decided. The bride will wear red.
I discuss a lot how fearful women are of color. They say “I could never pull it off” or “I don’t know how to do it.” I have asked myself, and my clients, what that fear comes from, and I’ve concluded that they have usually just never tried it!
I urge you to take the first step. Dive into color. You don’t need permission, but if you feel you must have it, I am granting it to you. Just keep these tips (not rules) in mind:
Pick One of Your Favorite Features
For eyes, I love Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream (not the lime green one yet–baby steps).
When you apply the color, just apply a swish of product to your lid. Don’t go above the crease. This keeps your look interesting, not overwhelming. If you want to keep it really subtle, line your eyes with a pop of color in the inner waterline and on the upper lid using a kohl pencil. I use the Make Up For Ever Brand.
- If your eyes are green, use purple.
- If your eyes are brown, use green.
- If your eyes are blue, use navy.
For lips, I can’t get enough of Armour Beauty’s lip glosses and Smashbox’s Be Legendary lipsticks. It seems a lot of people are brave enough for red, but not for pink, but both are great choices and really make a statement of classic beauty. Personally, whenever I wear coral, it stops traffic. A color like Smashbox’s Melondrama (a gorgeous coral) can create a bold youthful look in one application. Who knew coral was for the kids? The formulas that are out there certainly aren’t just for grandma anymore.
Before applying lipstick, put powder on moisturized lips (I use Mac’s Studio Fix). You can also line your lips, but you don’t have to. Boldly apply your lipstick or gloss and go!
Illuminate your skin
Use your favorite beauty balm and possibly a skin brightener so the focus is on your new look. There are no distractions when you appear to have perfect skin, and with the products out today, that’s an easy one to fake.
